| Prelude:
The Quigley house is one of those locations which
was the basis of haunted tales while growing up in Mobile. Situated just
outside of the famous Church Street cemetery; it was well known amongst
the teens as one of the most haunted places along Government Street.
Patricia contacted us requesting an investigation due to experiences
that she has had as well as heard. We were grateful to be the first
paranormal research group to be allowed to investigate and conduct
research in this historical landmark and area of legend in the Mobile
area.
The house was built in 1860 by George Gilmore
and owned in 1866 by Dr. Edmund Pendleton Gaines. Mrs. Susan Quigley
took ownership of the house in 1901. In 1963 the house was bought by the
City of Mobile where it was donated to the Junior Chamber of Commerce.
To this day it is the national headquarters of the America’s Junior Miss
scholarship program.
Reported Activity :
It is suspected that Mrs. Quigley still walks
the floors of this marvelous old house. As to why people feel it is Mrs.
Quigley is unclear, but some think it is because of the love and care
that she poured into it.
The ceilings of the house are approximately 14 feet as was the standard
height of the ceilings with houses of this age. People working in the
house have heard moving and foot steps in the upstairs while no one was
suppose to be in the building. Patricia has heard moving and footsteps
in an extremely large office in a far eastern office on the second
floor. Others have witnessed furniture and other small items moving from
where they once were – falling off shelves, etc.
Some accounts of paranormal activity revolve around the old staircase.
There have been witnesses of seeing a woman’s feet and partial legs
through the banister of the old staircase.
Baseline Readings:
NOAA Planetary K-Index: 1 Kp
NOAA Geomagnetic Field: 98nT
*K-indices of 5 or greater indicate storm-level
geomagnetic activity.
**Research done thus far shows there is a direct correlation between
paranormal activity and the strength of the of the earths geomagnetic
field.
No abnormal readings were captured in the house.
All readings were within acceptable and safe limits.

Experiential Analysis:
What we lacked in quantitative data we made up
for in personal experiences. Russ saw a red globe of light travel from
the larger east office, through the hallway to the central west offices.
Christina saw a white globe of light in the larger eastern office at the
entry door and disappeared. The globe loomed in place for several
seconds and was twice by the investigator.
All investigators smelled an overwhelming aroma of maple syrup during a
sit down evp vigil.
A fully charged FLIR battery drained in less than 5 minutes.
Christina saw a figure in the upstairs hallway while she was trying to
illicit a voice response from any spirits in the area. She was in the
large eastern office. Russ went into the smaller west offices with the
FLIR. He saw and thought there was another investigator, Bryan, standing
next to him so he turned to have Bryan hold the FLIR recorder. When he
turned to look, no one was there. The investigator he thought was next
to him, Bryan, was walking into the office with Bruce. His actions were
noted by both Bruce and Bryan.
Bryan and Christina heard an extremely audible grunt while in the larger
east office.
While changing a tape at the foot of the stairs, Russ had an
overwhelming sensation of fear. He removed himself from the premises.
The fear and nervousness was noted by most of the investigators and is
of great interest because Russ does not scare, startle or get
intimidated.
Conclusion:
The quantitative data we collected remained
constant throughout the investigation and as such was of no interest.
With this in mind we must base our findings off the experiences of the
investigators. There were witnesses to some of the experiences, but not
all could be corroborated with each investigator. Although the
investigators each feel there is something paranormal at the house; with
the lack of any type of quantitative evidence we cannot positively
confirm or justify saying the house is haunted. We feel that further
investigation and research of the structure is necessary.
