Background & Site History

The house was built back in the early 50’s. It is a 2 bedroom, 1700 square foot house. There were 4 reported deaths in the house; Faye, the current owners friend, a 2 year old child that drowned in the backyard pool, Faye’s mother and a man that committed suicide. In October 5 of 2005 the owner bought the house from her best friend, on November 29 2005 the owner’s best friend died in the house.

Reported Activity

The owner reports that she is visited by potentially 3 spirits. The spirit of her friend Faye that recently passed away, the 2 year old boy that drowned 3 years prior, and a neighbor named Bobby. The owner reports that when Faye is near, she can smell the expensive perfume that Faye use to wear. The owner also reports hearing Faye’s voice talking to her. The owner has reported that items in her house have become misplaced. After searching for long periods of time for the items; the items would be found later in strange and precarious locations such as a flower pot that sits on the patio. The owner alleges that when Bobby visits, she smells the cologne that he used to wear – Canoe. The owner also reports that her and her husband hear knocks on the front door at around 4:15am every morning. This was the time at which Bobby would stop by for coffee. The owner also reported that the smoke detector at the kitchen door will go off for no apparent reason. She also feels a disturbed air or presence real strong when her friend is near. There have also been reports of hearing splashing in the pool late at night.

Preliminary Findings & Hypothesis

During the preliminary interview several key bits of information were discussed that leads to this hypothesis. 1.) The house was next to one of Alabama Powers power distribution points, 2.) The owner had gone through a severe depression due to her friend passing away and 3.) The owner reported being unable to sleep.

It is expected that there will be extremely high electric and magnetic fields within the house produced by the expected leakage of the electrical facility. Due to the severe depression, and the weakness that occurs to the human body during times of great stress; we feel that the owner has become hypersensitive to the strong EM fields produced by the power distribution point. According to the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society report of October 2002, high electric and magnetic fields can cause symptoms of fatigue, stress, uneasiness, prickling, hallucinations, and other biological and cognitive problems.

According to Dr. Herbert Benson, founding president of the Mind/Body Medical Institute and a Mind/Body Medical Institute associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, stress can cause a number of bodily, cognitive, behavioral and emotional symptoms. Severe stress has also been attributed to strong psychogenic abnormalities such as hallucinations which are strengthened when paralleled with sleep deprivation.

We feel that the owner’s experiences may be attributed to, and in conjunction with, strong emotional states which have produced overwhelming stress, and the strong environmental disturbances brought on by the Alabama Powers facility.

Baseline Readings

Data Duration: 36 hours
Outside Humidity: 54%
Outside Temp: 46 degrees Fahrenheit
Climate: Windy LST: unknown
Planetary K Index: 1Kp (K-indices of 5 or greater indicate storm-level geomagnetic activity.)
Electron Flux: 10^1
Geomagnetic: 60nT

As we entered the residence we were all a bit taken back from the warmth. A porcelain gas heater was affixed to the wall within the living room that was keeping the living room at a very high temperature. This older type of gas heaters is notorious for releasing carbon monoxide into the environment; but as it were, we had forgotten our carbon monoxide detector.

While we did the sweep for EMF we were amazed that the levels were far lower then we expected. Through the baseline and further sweeps we experienced no abnormal and anomalous peaks in EMF reading or any fluctuation in ambient temperature.

It was also noticed the air within the residence was extremely dry due to the gas heater on the side of the wall. We experienced no excessive static electrical charges as well. All equipment worked as expected.

Baseline Readings
Area Temperature (degrees Fahrenheit) Electric and Magnetic Fields
Living Room/Dining Room 82-85 < .1mG
Master Bedroom 75 < .1mG
Kitchen 79 < .1mG
2nd Bedroom 69 < .1mG

Video and Audio Analysis

Video: none

Thermal: none

Camera: none

Audio: recordings captured several different anomalous noises that displayed strong vocal pattern evidence. Some of the patterns were distinguishable and determined to have valid syntactical value as well as to be semantically correct.

1. "Good night Faye"....Mans whispers then...."Yorkies are pretty dogs"
2. Chris and Mr. Gilmore talking....then childs voice
3. "Clicks from Camera".......Janet......"The roses are back"
4. Wierd harmonic noise like a laugh or taunt. Clicking heard of trying to put a stubborn tripod up.
5. "Can you give us a sign that you're here"...womans voice, then a man whispers.
6. "See, I dodn't tell you what it smelled like".....Well.......
7. Not sure

Subjective Analysis

During the investigation many team members smelled the unmistakable aroma of freshly cut roses. At the time of the initial questioning of the home owner, the interviewer mentioned she smelled roses very strongly.

Later in the investigation while one of the investigators were asking a question to the alleged ghost a few seconds passed and another investigator that was near said, “the roses are back.” 3 of the investigators smelled the roses while the others did not. The home owner also validated that the aroma was her best friend’s perfume. During this time, the recorder picked up a voice saying the owner’s name. The sequence went as follows:
Investigator 1: Can you let us know you are here
Voice: Janet.
Investigator 2: The roses are back.

Another investigator mentioned he smelled flowers but after carefully observing the room showed there was a car air freshener sitting on a dresser next to him. He asked the other investigators if the smell from the car air freshener was what they smelled. Each investigator that had smelled the roses verified that the smell of the car air freshener was not the smell they had earlier witnessed. While attempting to debunk the rose smell, the other investigators were over come by the strong rose aroma again. 2 other investigators standing next to them did not smell the aroma. Further survey of the house showed there to be several air fresheners under a fish aquarium stand and placed throughout the house.

See attachment A and B.

Conclusion

We felt sure that the house would sky rocket with AC and DC electric and magnetic fields, but as we tested our hypothesis we were amazed to find the house strongly at base with no abnormalities to note. We are a bit concerned, however, about the porcelain heater because of their ability release carbon monoxide into the house. Prolonged exposure to even the lowest levels of carbon monoxide can cause severe physiological and psychological problems. We strongly suggest that the home owner’s invest in carbon monoxide detectors and have them placed in strategic areas of the house.

There was a strong correlation between the phantom smells and the audio recordings, but the other air fresheners must be taken into consideration. The air fresheners did appear old, but could have fragrance left that is noticeable when the air current is disturbed.  It is suggested that all air fresheners be removed and then see if the phantom smells return.

We believe that Janet’s experiences will diminish over time as she eventually comes to terms with her friend’s death, but for now, Janet should be in comfort knowing that her friend is near to comfort her during those times of sadness and loss.
