- Security guards reported someone yelling to them fromt he ship, hearing footsteps, and banging.
- Hatches and doors closing by themselves.
- A visitor reported having her earring snatched from her ear as she walked from one of the sleeping quarters.
GHOTS hopes to have an investigation on the USS Alabama oneday to verify some of the above reports. There are a few hinderences to us being able to investigate the site. We are not sure if it will ever become a reality, you can read the long letter below.
Mr. Bennett:
Thank you for your request to do a full paranormal research aboard Battleship USS ALABAMA. Obviously, your request could not be granted at this time since the Park is closed due to approximately $4 million in Katrina damage. I have talked with several people very interested in spending the night aboard for such purposes over the past few years. We are not interested for a few reasons:
1 - We do not allow adults to spend the night aboard the Battleship. The only adults allowed to stay aboard are chaperons for organized Scout and/or Church youth groups and, of course, our employees. During hurricanes, our employees are allowed to bring their families as well.
2 - We do not allow co-ed youth groups and chaperons on any night we have organized overnight groups here, only all male or all female overnighters.
3 - We are a self-supporting agency of the State of Alabama. We get no support from anyone and depend entirely on admissions and other self-generated funds for survival. During the time we've been closed so far, we've expended a few hundred thousand dollars in clean-up expense, all of which is depleting our very sparse savings.
4 - We have had more than 160,000 people spend the night aboard the Battleship since 1985. We also have had employees who have been here since the Battleship was opened to the public in 1965. There has never been any report of paranormal activity to any member of our staff. The only things I have ever even seen about any paranormal activity aboard the ship is what I have seen on the Internet, that also unverified by anyone, and a story of a small child during a visit being protected by an angel while "lost" on the ship.
Interestingly, no groups have ever reported anything paranormal since 1985 since we go through a checkout process with all the Group Leaders and I certainly believe if that had been a topic of conversation with the youth, the adults would have heard about it.
In short, I certainly appreciate your interest in your organization and others like it, but we have no interest in allowing your group or any others to spend the night or any other time to research something that has never been mentioned to anyone in our organization since we've been open. I do appreciate you considering USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park as a site, but we must respectfully decline this and any other like request.
I speak for the USS ALABAMA Battleship Commission, which has the complete responsibility for the Park's operations. Good luck with your research in other locations and thank you for thinking of us.
xxx xxxxxxx, Executive Director
USS ALABAMA Battleship Commission
